From the Russian Empire to the Soviet Union Essay

It was not until after World War I that Russia began to undergo a series of changes. Following the Russian Revolution of 1917, the former Russian empire that had existed from 1721 up until then collapsed, and the Soviet Union was introduced. The geographic renaming of Russia from the Russian Empire to the Soviet Union also brought about many gradual changes. There were also changes in religion, as the new government replaced the role of the Orthodox Church. There was an increase in nationalism because of the conflicts that had existed between the Reds and the Whites. What used to be the czarist regime was replaced by a provisional government and then eventually by communist leaders Lenin and Stalin. There were also shifts in the economy,†¦show more content†¦The government was then transformed into a totalitarian state controlled by Joseph Stalin. Stalin’s Cult of Personality added to his mobilization of population made it easier for the government to achieve national goals. The traditional monarchy was ineffective because many of the policies introduced were short-lived and uprisings could not be stopped. Leaders such as Lenin and Stalin managed to consolidate more power in their hands and they were able to put down any opposition to the new government using methods such as propaganda, terror, and intimidation. The power of the secret police: check and gulag increased under the new government in order to maintain order in the several revolutions and the civil war that took place. The reason why Russia changed government was because of discontent with the czars because of their failure to carry out reforms. The oppressed revolutionaries wanted to take advantage of Russia’s involvement in World War One and to seize this opportunity to rise to power. The reason why minorities such as the Bolsheviks were able to overthrow a system of government that had existed for centuries was because through a series of promises, they were able to gain su pport from the Russians. Globally, this can be connected to the situation in China. The leader of the Communist, Mao, was also supported by the peasants and took advantage of the chaos with Japan to plant Communist ideas in the Chinese government.
